The Diocese of Chikwawa Social Services Directorate (DOC-SSD) in partnership with Bantwana/World Education Initiative (WEI) is implementing a USAID funded Ana Patsogolo Activity (APA) Project. The Diocese of Chikwawa, therefore, seeks to engage the services of a well experienced, highly motivated and suitably qualified person of Malawi origin to fill the following vacant position:
Position: Technical Specialist Economic Strengthening
Reports to: OVC Technical Lead
Location: Blantyre
Purpose of the Position
Under the guidance of the OVC Technical lead, the Technical Specialist Economic Strengthening (TSES) will be responsible for supporting and managing the technical implementation of the household economic strengthening (HES) aspects of the USAID funded Ana Patsogolo project in 8 districts in the Southern Region of Malawi. The role is critical in the translation of OVC and DREAMS Program household economic strengthening plans into activities, outputs, outcomes that ensure adolescent girls and young women and their families are thriving and resilient.
Working with other technical specialists in a consortium of 5 partners in 8 districts the TSES will have the following responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities and duties
Provide technical oversight for the implementation of all economic strengthening activities
Coordinate and spearhead the development of appropriate economic strengthening tools and share with partners
Train, mentor, supervise and support partner organizations in the implementation of all economic strengthening activities
Monitor implementation fidelity of economic strengthening models in partner organizations
Monitor all technical support in livelihood interventions, provided by technical experts to partner organizations
Analyze and monitor trends, opportunities and challenges related to market linkages and economic strengthening to continuously refine and improve intervention strategies
Serve as liaison and maintain good relations with the economic strengthening relevant government ministries and technical partners
Collaborate with the Economic Growth section of USAID and for synergies across their sector programs
Supervise and manage economic strengthening subcontracting agencies and technical consultancies
Contribute to documentation of project activities and achievements related to economic strengthening
Conduct site visits and spot checks to district activity locations to monitor implementation
of economic strengthening activities
Liaise with the M&E team in tracking and reporting related targets
Compile quarterly and annual progress reports
Keep abreast with, integrate or document emerging best practices in market linkages and economic strengthening for vulnerable households and AGYW
Network and represent the project at various forums/stakeholders meetings.
Qualifications and education requirements
● Advanced Degree in a Social Science, Economics or first degree plus a minimum of 6 years relevant working experience
● Substantial experience in stakeholder engagement with government, donors, civil society at senior levels of authority
● Proven ability to represent and influence policy direction and decisions at national level
● In-depth knowledge of positive youth development, adult education, and workforce development
● At least five years’ experience in working with vulnerable young people in economic strengthening initiatives, in areas such as small-scale crop and livestock production, value-chain development, business development, entrepreneurship, financial services
● Experience in working with different stakeholders, preferably experience in leading coordination efforts at national level
● Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
● Ability to manage multi-donor funded programs
● Ability to work independently, take initiative and leadership.
